LIGHTS! CAMERA! BLACK HILLS!
Our National Treasure in Disney's National Treasure 2
Mount Rushmore is again a pivotal location for intrigue and fast paced action in the new Walt Disney Pictures/Jerry Bruckheimer Films release of National Treasure – Book of Secrets now in theaters.
In this action thriller, Ben Gates (Nicholas Cage) rushes against time and the bad guys to clear the family name.
According to Steve Mapel, the location manager for Book of Secrets, the scouting, permitting, and logistics for the Black Hills site locations started nearly 6 months before the filming in April 2007.
Mapel said that his first visit to the area was memorable. “ The local people are so friendly and filming really went well. Gerard Baker [Superintendent of Mt. Rushmore Memorial], the folks at the Park [Custer State Park], and the Black Hills National Forest were great to work with, and we really appreciated their tremendous help and access. I really want to thank them. We had many great choices of beautiful places to film – it kept the scriptwriters busy with rewrites as we kept shooting additional sites around Rushmore, Sylvan Lake, and Custer Park. It was one of the best experiences of my career.”
Mapel added that “Mount Rushmore truly is a national treasure, and I am glad it plays a big part in the film. The film captures some of that beauty in the Hills.”

HBO Series DEADWOOD Continues to Bring New Visitors to the Black Hills
The success of the colorful history-based series has also lead to a boom in Internet traffic and other requests for information about the Black Hills and Deadwood and its rowdy past. Curiosity about historic Deadwood legends Seth Bullock, Sol Star, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane Cannary, Jack McCall, Al Swearengen, Charlie Utter, Preacher Smith, the Chinese community, and Mt Moriah Cemetery has kept staffs at the Adams Museum and Deadwood CVB busy responding to history and tourism questions. Another character in the city at the time was legendary lawman Wyatt Earp, with Gerald McRaney as mining magnate George Hearst, and Emmy award winner Brian Cox portraying Jack Langrishe, a real-life Deadwood theater owner and producer.
If you are looking for more information about gold mining in the Black Hills, George Hearst, or the Homestake Gold Mine you are in luck! HBO's "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" debuts in Rapid City; Brings Eastman Story to the Small Screen
HBO Productions has once again visited the tumultuous history of the Black Hills in the late 1800s with the film “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.” The film’s basis was the award-winning book of the same name by Dee Brown. While not completely accurate in an historical sense, the film’s story revolves around the life of Dr. Charles A. Eastman. In this film, the character of Eastman is portrayed by actor Adam Beach. The film's South Dakota premiere screening was at Rapid City's Rushmore Plaza Civic Center on May 17th, 2007. More

| Teamwork and a Fantastic Bunch of Cycles |
What to you have when you combine dozens of vintage cycle dating back to 1911; countless pieces of cycle and Sturgis Rally memorabilia; displays chronicling the pioneers and heroes of the motorcycle culture; and literally hundreds of patrons and dedicated supporters – that would equal the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.
Then, add its new Executive Director Christine Paige Diers, and the future of the Museum looks even better! A native of the Black Hills, Paige Diers brings a great deal of public relations and organizational experience to the position. She is understandably excited to be in the Director’s chair, and gives due credit for the Museum’s progress to her successor Pepper Massey and the Museum's great volunteers and friends. Christine has even picked out her favorite “ride” in the collection – so watch out Black Hills!
Welcome Home Christine!
