8. Franklin Pierce

Franklin Pierce
14th President of the United States
March 4, 1853 to March 4, 1857

NW Corner of 9th and Main Streets

Born: November 23, 1804, Hillsborough, NH
Died: October 8, 1869, Concord, NH, age 64

Nickname: “Baby Pierce” referring to his youthful appearance and age at taking office.

Pierce, a lawyer, served in the US House of Representatives, the Senate, and took part in the Mexican-American War where he attained the rank of brigadier general. Likeable, he had many friends, but made decisions during his presidency which were divisive and earned him the distinction of being considered one of the worst presidents in US history.
